Frequently Asked Questions

WE KNOW THAT SOME OLDER DOWNLOAD PACKS ARE NOT DOWNLOADING CORRECTLY. SORRY THAT IT HAS TAKEN SO LONG TO WORK ON, WE ARE FIXING IT NOW.

Most of the files on the site are not designed for use on mobile devices. If you can open rar files, read pdfs, and print from your mobile device, then you're in luck. If you cannot do all of these things, then we strongly recommend using a computer to print the files.

On this site, you will find papercraft models of Pokémon which you can print out and build yourself, with just a pair of scissors and little bit of glue.

Each individual post on this site represents one Pokémon model. At the bottom of every post you'll find a description and building tips related to that particular model, plus a download link.

The Download links are either in A4 or Letter size, depending on which country you are from, and from either of these links, you will receive a ZIP or RAR archive file, which can be opened with WINZIP or WINRAR (see list below)

It is possible to also use a Mac to do so, and download links for Mac are provided below labelled as such.

Before asking any questions regarding files not opening correctly, be sure to check the file extension. The files provided only open with the corresponding programs listed below. Match up the extension with the programs.

If a file is not opening properly, be sure that the right program is associated with the right file. If a download pack is opening up in browser and showing an abundance of text, it means you don't have a Rar program set to open Rar files.

If the files does open in Winrar and still gives an error, then that's a problem you should let us know about and we can fix it.

Within these files, you will find:
  • several PDFs which you can print directly out using Adobe Reader, and
  • a PDO file which can only be opened with Pepakura Viewer.

The PDO is your virtual 3d instruction manual.
From it you will be able to rotate the virtual model in any direction and see how each piece of the template corresponds with the next.
Sadly, Pepakura Viewer is a PC program, and does not operate on Apple Macs, without the use of a PC emulator (such as Boot Camp or Parallels).

Common problems when opening files

If Pepakura keeps closing when you try to open a file, you probably installed Pepakura Designer instead of Pepakura Viewer. Since we lock our files, Designer can't open them and thus, close.

To download the models, you need to click, at the bottom of each post beside the "Download" text, the format of paper that you use, either A4 or Letter. A4 is the international format while Letter is mostly the American format. You can look at which one you use in your printer setting or on the pack of paper that you bought.

Clicking on either A4 or Letter will make you download an archive file which will either be a Zip or a Rar file. Those are NOT the templates to build the models, but are the "box" inside which you'll find the templates. You can find a list of programs used to open those archives above.

The Pdf files are opened with Acrobat Reader and are templates ready to be printed. The Pdo files are opened with Pepakura Viewer and are kind of 3d templates that can be used for instructions on how to build the models; you can also print the template from it. You can find how it work on Pepakura's website, with a quick google search. There's even a how-to video on Youtube. The Jpg/Png files are textures that can be use in Pepakura Viewer to change the look of the model, usually changing it to the Shiny form.
------------------------

Options in Pepakura Viewer

To change the textures (colour):
  • Unpack the files from the model's download pack into a folder.
  • Open the PDO file in Pepakura Viewer.
  • In the "Setting" menu, select "Texture Setting ..."
  • Then click on "Specify Texture Image" and select the new texture (BMP, JPG, or PNG) located in the download file, and apply.

To print a template from Pepakura Viewer:
(Not alwys necessary since we usually include required PDFs)

  • In the "File" menu, select "Print" and follow the instructions from your printer.
  • You can also adjust the colour and thickness of the lines in the "Setting" menu, then select "Print Setting..."

To show the edge Ids
(numbers beside each tabs showing where the piece go. e.g.:
tab #43 glue to edge #43)
  • In the "View" menu, select "Show Edge Id".
  • You can also adjust the size of the number and where they appear (inside/outside) in the "Setting" menu, then select "Other Settings...", then "General Settings".
  • To Adjust, select "Place edge ID inside of face" and "Font size of Edge ID (pt)"

To add a colored border around the pieces.
(can reduce the appearance of "white lines" in a completed model)

  • In the "View" menu, select "Overflow Paint".
  • You can also adjust the size of the border or color the whole tabs (flaps) in the "Setting" menu, then select "Other Settings ...", then "General Settings"
  • To change between Overflow Paint and Solid Colored Tabs, select "Paint flaps with neighboring face color instead of overflow paint". To change the width of Overflow Paint, input the desired amount with"Amount of Overflow Paint [_] mm".

-------------------------

iPad/iOS Device Download and Printing Notes

1. Download the iZip app for iPad/iOS above
2. Load an Adobe Reader App from the ap-store, it's also free
3. Then go back to the Paperpokes website
4. It will not download from the Facebook link, Bing, or Google, it will only download from your browser
5. Then click on Letter or A4 next to Download on the model you wish to print to download
6. Close the site
7. Open iZip and click on your local files
8. Click on model name of the downloaded file
9. Double tap model name, it should be highlighted
10. Then click on one of the PDF files and the printable pages will appear
11. Click on "Open In" under the model pictures
12. Now click on the Adobe Reader Icon and the model should appear
13. Above that there is the small square shape icon with an arrow on it, click on that
14. Click "Print" and a print box will appear
15. Chose your printer device of choice
16. Make sure you DESELECT "Double sided", you don't want the pages back to back
17. Then click PRINT
-------------------------

Q: What kind of paper/glue do you use?

A: This is what we would recommend:

1. Use decent paper - (NOT regular 80gsm printer paper) find some that is no less than 120gsm in weight

2. A good pair of sharp scissors
eg: Honey Bee non-stick precision Scissors

3. An used-up ball point pen or craft stylus to score/emboss fold lines with
eg: Pergamano small ball stylus

4. A small (~15cm) metal ruler - metal doesn't get damaged or dinted like plastic.

5. Decent acid-free paper glue - importantly it needs to be fast setting
eg: Power Pritt Multipurpose Extra Strong Gel or Aleene's Original Tacky Glue

6. Tweezers - preferably non-stick

7. A tooth-pick (wooden cuticle stick) for getting into those hard to reach places

8. A craft knife/scalpel which has replaceable blades
eg: x-acto knife

9. A large self-healing cutting mat

-------------------------

Q: How do you resize the templates?

1. One way would be using Photoshop or another image editing software to scale up (or down) the pages of the pdf, and printing them larger (or smaller). You would also have to split apart the pages like this too (if printing larger), and keep the same scale for every page when resizing.

2. The other way would be if you have access to a printer that can print pages like A1, or something larger or smaller depending on what you wish to do. Print with it, scale to page when asked. Each template page will then fit each printed page.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paper_size

-------------------------

Pro-tip - How to Build a Good-Looking Model:

1. Score/emboss the fold lines of the template piece before you cut it out of the card stock. Otherwise you'll end up trying to keep fiddly pieces of paper still with one hand while trying to score/emboss with the other - it never end well.

___________________ Solid Lines are for cutting

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Dashed Lines are for Mountain Folds

— - — - — - — - — - — - — - Dashed/Dotted Lines are for Valley Folds

2. If you chose to do a lined template, once you have embossed/scored and cut out the piece, DO NOT fold along the crease lines. Instead, just glue it as if it were completely unembossed/unscored. This way, you allow the paper to bend naturally along the lines you have created, and the result is a much smoother build

3. The only exception to the above "do-not-fold" rule are:
  • tabs, and
  • if you have a fold that creates an angle that is <45º.
4. If you choose to build a Lineless model, score/emboss the tablines out, fold them, and then glue as per normal. The result will be a smooth build without the clumsy, visible crease-lines.

-------------------------

Q: Who are the members of Paperpokes and where do you all come from?

A: The Paperpokes Team members are (in alphabetical order):
  • Brandon, USA, male
  • Lyrin, Italy, female
  • Paperbuff, USA, female
  • Pixel-Kakashi, Mexico, male
  • PMF, Canada, male
  • POdragon, USA, female
  • Skelekitty, Australia, female

Q: Why can't I download the files - all I get is some sort of strange coding?

A: We do not exactly know why this happens, but there are two ways to get around this issue.

1) Save the page as a browser file and then change the suffex to either .zip or .rar (depending on what your mouse/bottom of your browser says as you move the pointer across the download link). Or,

2) Use an alternate browser (e.g.: Explorer, Firefox, Safari, etc )

Q: Why does Pepakura instantly shut down when I try to open a PDO?

A: The reason for this is probably because you are trying to open our files in Pepakura Designer - You can only open our PDOs in Pepakura Viewer.

Q: Can I be a testbuilder for your team?

A: Maybe if we like your work, but don't ask. If we see your builds on deviantart, or you submit pictures to the Facebook Page and we think you would be a good addition to the team, we will invite you.

I love the site! I have built many of your models so far, and am always waiting for the next one.

As far as this FAQ is concerned, could you recommend supplies? What glue is best? What style/type/weight do you feel works better? As far as printers, I know you might not want to go so far to reccomend a particular brand/model, but some general guidelines would be great (inkjet vs laserjet for example).

Finally, I have seen on other websites a discussion about "smooth" versus "folded" builds. I have seen a number of your pictured models do use the smooth style. Could you give your tips on when this techniques mght be appropriate (and for which models/parts)?

Again, thanks for everything you guys do!

I love Pokemon<3
but can u make the fold lines thicker? from pikachu doll.
because i've printed them out but and i can't see the lines T___T

x.

Rebecca said...

Hey,
I am making the Pikachu and Snorlax.
And i have cuted/folded everything.
But where must i start to glue everything by Pikachu?

thanks for everything!

@ Anonymous 02 April, 2010 12:32

To make the fold/cut lines darker, you will need to print off the template directly from the .PDO, after you have adjusted the transparency settings:
SETTINGS>PRINT SETTINGS>TRANSPARENCY [100%-0%]

Jeremy said...

Hey! I absolutly love this site and I love every model out there so far, but... :) do you think that EVENTUALLY (not asking you to rush) ALL pokemon will be available on the site? I know you have a long way to go, but it would be a really great goal to set! Thanks for all you've done!

PMF said...

Hmm... Jeremy, the answer to your question is no, we just can't. But we'll try to keep it as long as possible.

Jeremy said...

What makes you decide which you pokemon you will do next?

PAPERPOKES said...

It's pretty much which Pokémon we feel like doing next and which Pokémon fit whos "personality". Skelekitty buils some kinds of Poké while Brandon build other kinds. So it depends on which Pokémon every TBs feel like building and when they do so, just like when every editors feels like doing a Poké and...
So in other words, we have a list of maybe 20 Pokémons to make and it depends on which one each of us feel like working on in the chain... (Rip, Edition, Testbuild, Template, Download Pack.)

Anonymous said...

Will the pokemon stand? Can their joints bend? can they be played with or are they just eyecandy?

PAPERPOKES said...

So, Yes, most of the Pokémon stand by themselves, there's less than a dozen that don't, mostly round Pokémon without legs or flying ones.

No, their joints are glued so they can't move afterward and so, you can play with them but they should mostly be eyecandy. Use thicker paper if you wanna play with 'em tho.

james rivera said...

how do you know where to fold if you print out the lineless papers? Many pokemon i see that are folded do not look like they have any lines

PAPERPOKES said...

@ James

The whole idea of the lineless models is that you don't have any folds on them.

The only folds (if at all) are generally the tabs - the rest of it relies on the fact that the paper bends naturally.

Anonymous said...

do you guys have a faq for how to BUILD them, because i can't just go and snap my fingers and it will be done, and im also new to this, i found this site yesterday, so yeah i don't know about gluing them together DX

Anonymous said...

@Anonymous

Just go to "Haywan's Tutorial" at the bottom of any page.It will tell you the basics of cutting, gluing, downloading, and even planning.

Anonymous said...

I love the site thanks so much!

But I have one suggestion, rubber cement is really easy and great to use I highly suggest it, I've been doing papercrafts for over a year now and I only use rubber cement.

Anonymous said...

How can I make them close? I keep making these ones which are curclular and don't know how to close the ball.

PAPERPOKES said...

Closing the models is often the hardest part. If the model has nice flat feet, we try to make the closing point there. The round ones are usually the tricky ones, and closing mostly requires good glue.

Anonymous said...

I think they all need instructions,
i'm kinda stuck on nidorino:(

PAPERPOKES said...

we add some basic instructions on all the newest models templates, but what we recommend is using a program called Pepakura Viewer which is basically 3d instructions. we always offer a .pdo file that you can open with that program.

Anonymous said...

how do i make them i really dont get it

Anonymous said...

i accidentally tried opening the pdo file with adobe reader and now i cant figure out how to change it so that i can open it with pepakura.

ive tried re downoalding the papercraft files but it still doesnt work.

any advice on how to open the pdo files with pepakura?

PAPERPOKES said...

If you are running a PC, you have to right click on the file and select OPEN WITH, then select CHOOSE PROGRAM, and choose PEPAKURA VIEWER and check the box that says ALWAYS SELECT THIS PROGRAM TO OPEN THIS KIND OF FILE.

If you're running a Mac ... I can't personally help you, sorry :\

HELPPP PLEASE said...

Hi!! i have emailed you and i really need help. when i download anything, and open it with pepakura it always says "cannot load file of specified type." its pepakura veiwer 3? i dont know if this si the right one. PLEASE HELP ME. i am desperate to make one. I use PC and not mac

PLEASE x

PAPERPOKES said...

The type of files that Pepakura Viewer opens are PDO file. If you try to open the RAR pack or any of the PDF or JPG files, you'll get that "cannot load file of specified type" mention.

See info above for more info on how to use each files.

Anonymous said...

Is it Pepakura Viewer 3 I have to download? Thanks. Also how do I use it?

PAPERPOKES said...

Yes, always download the latest version. To use it, you double-click on any PDO file and it will open and you can see how the model looks in its entirety, and how each of the pieces in the template correspond to one another.

However, if the PDO does not automatically default to Pepakura Viewer, you will need to:
>RIGHT CLICK on the PDO
>OPEN WITH...
>CHOOSE PROGRAM
>PEPAKURA VIEWER
>CHECK always use the program to open this kind of file
>OK

Megan said...

I tried that and Pepakura Viewer 3 wasnt on there. What I do is transfer all the templates into a different folder that I named 'Pokemon Printouts'. So what I did instead was:
> go into Pepakura Viewer 3
> click the 'open' button
> find and click on the pdo of the poke you want
> click 'okay'

It should be open by then.

Other wise put up your question here, I check it daily, so I should also be able to offer some assistance.

Megan said...

I just noticed I missed a bit on my previous comment. What I meant to put was
> go into Pepakura Viewer 3
> click the 'open' button
> find the folder (if you have one, its good to have one if you share the computer with somebody else)
> find and click on the pdo of the poke you want
> click okay

It should then open up.

Oh, and to the PaperPokes team, I have a request:
Could you please do Charizard or Blastoise or Grovyle. They would look so cool.

And I live in Australia too. So its currently 7:52am Monday the 20th of September.

Anonymous said...

Hey i was wondering if someone could help me. I'm stuck with the PDO files i have read you have to open with stuff and when i right click the PDO file it just not there and when i double click it it opens up in pad instead of pepakura, is there a way i can use PDO i really need it for jolteon :/

PAPERPOKES said...

Reinstalling (or installing) Pepakura Viewer should fix the problem. If not, "right-click" and "open files with..." and choose the program or open Pepakura directly from the folder.

Anonymous said...

I just was curious, was the snorlax the first pokemon you put on the website? It seems to be that on your archives the snorlax is the oldest, but I just wanted to ask to make sure.

Megan said...

Yeah, which was your first model?

I also ask questions, not just answer them ^_'

Anonymous said...

i love paper pokes! But i cant make them, so i was wondering if you could make them and send them to me, and i could pay you...

PMF said...

no we cant. The whole idea of papercraft is to build it yourself. so no, we dont sell our models.

Anonymous said...

I've been looking through the crafts and I think they all look great! I haven't downloaded any yet and i'm wondering, for the coloured parts of the pokemon, do you print out the template onto coloured paper? or are you meant to use your printer ink.

Thanks =D

PAPERPOKES said...

yes, you use your printer ink and not colored paper. all the colors and textures are included when you print.

there's the option to print in black and white tho.

leafeon4ever! said...

love yr site :0 just want to ask how do u no what pose to make yr models in? and how do u no how to make the pieces? just curious because ive made alot of yr models and i dont no how to do it likme u guys can...

Brandon said...

There isn't really a particular pattern or anything. The pose comes from what we think would look good by observing different in game models; we end up picking the one we like best. The pieces are a pattern in a way, but we have to make it as we see it; it's never one set thing.

In other words, we have our own style; and if you want to try and do something, make it your own as well.

D said...

I have a suggestion for a question that should be added:

"Can I be a testbuilder/part of the team?"

I've seen a lot of people ask it. I don't know if it would reduce the number of people that ask it but it couldn't hurt.

Brandon said...

Thanks for the suggestion, that's a good idea. Added.

Anonymous said...

If you have made a Papercraft by yourself and it's not on your site yet, can I send it to you guys with pictures and all and you will place it?

PMF said...

We will probably not post it except if it's really good and has been standardized to our templates. You can always send it tho, we'll be happy to see it and give you comment or advices on it.

Brandon said...

I'll add a little more info to the post, under notes.

Anonymous said...

I have a question. How long does the average paperpoke take? Eg. Shaymin.

Anonymous said...

What's the difference between A4 and Letter?

PAPERPOKES said...

A4 is the international standard size as developed by the ISO. Letter is the size the USA uses instead.

leafeon4ever! said...

how did u guys meet? (just curious cause u live all over the place!)

Brandon said...

Mostly through the NintendoPapercraft forums, and the Pokemon contest that was held years ago. After seeing we had common interests, a group was formed... and we're still going strong today, with a few additional members.

leafeon4ever! said...

i no this is a wierd theory.... but i was thinking that a good thing to add to yr models page (where u download them) how much hours (on avererage) it takes to make em / time taken.great models as always! :)

leafeon4ever! said...

why are the numbers (to build the model in)on every template???

thirteenfury said...

leafeon4ever!:

I don't know if the PaperPokes team could actually give an average time per model, because it really depends on your experience and skill level.

For example, someone who's completely new to papercrafting would probably start off with a Porygon, and even then it might take hours or days. Whereas someone who builds a lot of complex models would take way less time than the beginner papercrafter. And an experienced papercrafter probably knows some tricks about how to build models that you can't teach or show on a video, you just learn by practice and feeling the weight and pull of the paper in your hands.

tl;dr: Papercrafting, like any skill, should be judged on how long it takes by your OWN experience and skill levels, not someone else's. Everyone's abilities at "visual thinking" and "muscle memory" are unique.

/Sorry for rambling. I get carried away a lot. :P

Sarah :D said...

how come when u have made a paperpoke, it takes so long to make the packs????? cause ive seen quite alot of poke's on yr DA gallary and i dont see em on da site. sry if im not suppost to ask! just wanted to no!

PMF said...

3 reasons, Schedule / Problems to fix / Lazyness :P

Most of the time when a model takes a long time to be posted is because we found some problems in the testbuild and so we need time to fix the problems and retest it.
Other times, the model is scheduled for a precise date (bday, holiday, special) so even if everything's ready, we still wait for the date to post it.
Then it's a question of schedule since we try to post models each week and not all at once so people can find a new model each monday and have the time to build them.

leafeon4ever! said...

what does it mean by "unofficial pokemon papercrafts"???

PAPERPOKES said...

because the models aren't licensed to neither Nintendo nor Game Freak, so they aren't Offical.

In other words, they don't have the official seal of Nintendo :P

Just want to know, what do you use for your 3d modeling?

Anonymous said...

I wish you could make a wooper model soon! It would make my day!

Anonymous said...

I have a mac and can't open any of the download links, what should I do?

PAPERPOKES said...

first, read the FAQ since the info on how to open the packs are in it.

second, write a letter to pepakura to finally make their programs work on mac.

third, use the info on the pdfs to help you build the models.

Anonymous said...

How to change the eyes texture. The Pepakura viewer only changes the body texture.

PAPERPOKES said...

The files we supply are the only alterations to the texture we officially approve.

However, if you feel confident in altering the texture in Photoshop, that is your choice.

BradleyDS1 said...

It would be good if you could make the second gen starters becauuse you've made every gen starters eccept for them. If it too complicated to make the model thats fine, and one more thing YOU GUYS ARE THE BEST!!!

Hi, How do you adjust the size of a pdo model because the dialga I was talking about earlier I wat to make mini. Also why do you make it so that you can't open them in pepakura desingner and how do you do that?

PMF said...

First, that Dialga wasn't made by us and as such it won't be postedon our site.

Second, we lock the pdo so they can only be openend with Pepakura Viewer. Main reason being so people won't steal our templates.

Anonymous said...

I still don't get how to open 'em
files. Even my mom doesn't know how.

:[=

Brandon said...

Make sure you have both Winrar, Pepakura Viewer, and Adobe Reader (this should already be installed regularly). When installing Pepakura Viewer and Winrar, it should be asked whether or not you want to associate .pdos with Pepakura and rars/zips with Winrar. You want these options selected. That way when you go to open the files, they'll open with these programs. First open the rar, and the option 'Extract' should be in the left corner of the opened window. Select it, and select a directory to extract to. Then open this folder, and open the pdo/pdfs with Pepakura/Adobe Reader.

Anonymous said...

I really want to make the models but I dont want to download anything, have any surgestions?

PAPERPOKES said...

Find something else to do.

Anonymous said...

Ok, Im new to this and I downloaded Peprika Vewer and I think I downloaded Winrar correctly but when I go to open the files it says do you want to find a program on the internet or do you want to save it what do I do, have I done something wrong in the downloading?

Brandon said...

When you downloaded the programs, you did install them as well right? During the installation process, you should have had the option to associate the file types. If you did not do that but do have the programs installed, you'll want to browse your computer for the appropriate programs (Winrar->.rar, Pepakura->.pdo) and select those for each. Then they should open with those programs.

Unknown said...

I have never done any paper crafting, but I'm really interested in starting it after seeing your website. Since I'm starting off, what do you think is the easiest pokemon to do for beginners?

Brandon said...

Absolute easiest I'd have to say Porygon.
Few more would be Staryu, Munna, Gear, Kabuto, Lunatone. Usually anything that looks fairly easy will be, so just try out some you like.

Anonymous said...

I need help on how to open a file i just downloaded and i can't find it anywhere on my PC. Do you think you can help me out?

Brandon said...

When you download it, did you select open file or save? If you select open, it won't save on your computer, it will just open. If that's the case, extract the file, being sure to note where you extract it to.
If you save, the default save location is in the 'Downloads' folder. If it is not there, you can check where it would save by going to Tools: Options in your web browser. Go to the General tab of the window that opens, and there should be a line that says "Save files to: 'Location'"
That location would be where to check, or change it so files are saved elsewhere.

How do you make the designs? Then I could make some of my own. If it's too complicated to design them, could you (please) design some of these?: Arceus, Giratina, Dialga, Palkia, Zekrom, or any cool lengendaries you have not designed yet. Please do what you can and thanks!

Still awaiting reply from my comment on April 3rd

Brandon said...

You could try the first Poochyena as a starter (the one by PODragon). It's simpler than the newer one. Others would be Klink, Porygon, Staryu, Starmie, Munna. Most things under the label Easy are good things to start with.

Brandon said...

I haven't replied because I don't have anything to say that couldn't easily be found from a google search.
Other than maybe the programs I use are Metaseq and Photoshop, but those are just preference.

PAPERPOKES said...

We also use Blender and 3DSMax for modeling.

Templates are made with Pepakura Designer... if that bit wasn't obvious enough yet. :/

Anonymous said...

Hi, have made many of your pokemon and i was wondering if you have uploaded the templates for the people. I really want to make them :)
Keep up the AMAZING work

where can i get card stock? i wanna make a pokeball :) (ive already made the pokeball on normal printer paper but it doesnt close and it bends to much)

Brandon said...

Any office supply store should stock it though, like Office Depot, Staples, etc. I would recommend not getting full on cardstock as well (which is usually ~60lb) and leaning towards 32 lb (120 gsm) instead, although you may want to try both to see which works best for you.

Brandon the legendary pokemon papercrafter, will (in any time soon) you build dialga, palkia or arceus? I've build your groudon and I'm not that good with my hands but it turned out really well (it was my first papercraft).
Keep the Pokemon coming ;P

leafeon4ever! said...

hey guys you should make your moto "Gotta Build Them all!!"

IcyPheonix said...

You said that depending on which we clicked-letter of A4-we would get either a .rar and zip file to open. I only get .rar no matter what I click and it won't open. Does this not work for Macs?
I really want to try to make one of these but I can't.

Brandon said...

Letter or A4 is the type of paper used. Some of the Pokes have .rar download packs, others have .zip, but both Letter and A4 will be the same type for each.
To open rar on a Mac, you'll need UnrarX.

Kamika said...

Your site is awesome ! Did 2 of your models and getting addicted.
i hope giratina will be available soon :3

leafeon4ever! said...

@anon 07 may. scoring or embrossing basically just mean marking out where the lines are. to do this u will need a:
1. ruler
2. used up ball point pen.
3. something to lean on.
ok first find out where yr going to score / embross yr lines. line the ruler up with where yr going to score / embrosse then just simply run your ball point pen (used up) against the line. and there u have it! simples!

I was wondering, is there a particular brand of paper that you use for making these? I have the recommended 120gsm paper, but I'm not sure if it's the right type.

Also, when I try making the rounder models (like Magnemite) the ends never seem to meet correctly. Anyone got a solution that might help? Please help.

Anonymous said...

hey, legendary papercraft makers!
is there any way you could make sure your PDF all have the overrun bit, because whenever i make on that doesn't, i get a load of white line where it joins, im sure other people new to it get the smae, it'd just help with the asthetics of the final models.
thanks in advance

P.S. any chance you could make Dialga in the near future?

emberheart said...

thx. but rlly need the evolutions too plz.

thx in advance, and UR WEBSITE IS THE GREATEST!!!!!!

emberheart said...

which do u recomend, a4 or letter?
what is the difference between them?
thx so much!!

PAPERPOKES said...

It depends on which country you're from, Letter is USA, A4 pretty much everywhere else.

It also usually says which it is on the box/wrap when you buy paper.

Brandon said...

About particular paper brands, it's usually good to go with 32lb (120 gsm). Brand usually doesn't make a difference, but I suppose if it was really cheap paper it may fall apart easier.

For rounder models, curl the pieces before assembling them. I use a pencil (any long rod shaped object would work) to roll over it while holding it in my hand, so that it gives it a more natural curve.

Anonymous said...

Do you have to pay for Winrar, or is there a way to get it free? And do you even need it to view the pokemon?

Brandon said...

Winrar is a free program, yes. Just download the install file, and install it; after the 'trial' is over, a message will appear prompting you to buy it, but that can just be closed and Winrar will still work just fine.

You need it to extract the rars that the files are in, so yes, you need it to get the files.

I still can't get this stuff to work. I have to keep downloading Pepakura because for whatever reason it keeps deleteing itself every time I close it down. And when I have it up and I try to open the .pdo files, they arent there! It won't let me open anything.
I must be misunderstanding something about the program. How do I fix this?

PAPERPOKES said...

From what I can see, you probably installed Pepakura Designer instead of Pepakura Viewer.

Either that or your computer has troubles with the program, or you're using a mac, or you're trying to open a file with the wrong program.

Nope, it's not. That's quite a bit older than our Blastoise, and was made by someone else.

Anonymous said...

I still confuse about model that cant stand properly without weight on it. And I also confuse about kind of weight do you use. I always used a base to make it stand.
Please answer me because I cant use base forever. Thanks before and sorry for bad English (:

Feuer said...

@ Anon,
Basically the 'weight' is just like a small coin or stone, or in some cases, a small bit of rolled up paper.
I have actually made a Snivy without a base or weight and it stands!
It is possible to stand without weight or base.

I was wondering, what would be a good model to try for doing a first-time lineless version?

PAPERPOKES said...

Pretty much anything fairly easy. I think Porygon would be a bad one in this case though, since it involves sharp precise folds.
Try something fairly smooth, like Munna, Shedinja, any of the Chibis, Voltorb, Electrode, Piplup, etc. Just look for something that doesn't have many sharp folds, and it should work pretty well.

Anonymous said...

I've got the same problem as HPNightstripe127. My grandpa, dad, andmom are all bewildered on this problem. The computer repairman thinks it's a program that protects you from viruses that's not installed. I don't think that's the problem, though.

PAPERPOKES said...

HP, no need to comment twice as two different people :P The first comment wasn't even on the site, so there's no way you could have possibly known you had the same problem.

Which verification do you mean? If you mean when you go to open the pdo, and it just doesn't open, you probably installed Designer and not Viewer.
If that's the case, then clicking this link and downloading the Viewer installer should correct the problem. Be sure to associate the extension pdo with the correct program.

If that's not the case, I'll need more info to try and figure it out.

HPNightstripe127 said...

I forgot to put the comment onto the first comment after I'd already posted it. I feel really embarrassed... Sorry if I caused any trouble.
My computer starts installing the download, but when it's done, it verifies it to make sure it got everything and that there's no bad things on it. When it verifies, it gets hung up and won't close. I just can't get Pepakura Viewer to download.

sebas said...

this is just the best web page ever! i cant stop downloading the models! this page is awsome! thank you!

HPNightstripe127 said...

Me again. Even though Pepakura Viewer still won't work, I can still print and make your models. thanks for the help anyway.

Brandon said...

It sounds like it may be a problem with your virus scanner, or whatever is 'verifying' the process.
If it won't download at all, try a different web browser, and if it won't install, try a different virus scanner/disabling your current one.

HPNightstripe127 said...

How do you open PDO files?

Anonymous said...

pdo files are opened with pepakura viewer. download link is in the top. my pepakura viewer downloaded via this link is however not showing anything. i just get a black screen. and all system requirements are there.

HPNightstripe127 said...

I kind of meant, are there any other ways to open a PDO file? P. S. If you're too busy, I can just try to figure it out myself.

thirteenfury said...

@HPNightstripe127:

If you can't find the right page from Pepakura to download the Viewer, use this link.

http://www.tamasoft.co.jp/pepakura-en/download/viewer.html

If you mean what other programs can open PDO files besides Pepakura Viewer and Designer, I don't think any other program can do it on its own. PDO is a file format specific to Pepakura programs. It's like how you can't use Microsoft Word to open an mp3 file--mp3s aren't made for programs that only open document files.

PAPERPOKES said...

That's one of the big mystery of the world... well, since any liquid is out of the question, I guess you could use a soft duster once in a while to get the dust off of 'em. The models also get more fragile with time so you should not touch them too much if you want to keep them for a long time.

Will you invite designers to the team, if you like their Pokemon papercraft designs?

PMF said...

Maybe... but probably not, we're real picky...

Draciusen said...

I know how to insert the textures onto Pepakura, but how do you add the other styles?

Like the Dratini Chibi has the peeved-ish eyes on one of the textures, but I can only get the cutesy ones to show up. Any help?

Brandon said...

You would have to use a photoediting software (ie: Photoshop/GIMP) to move the eye you want over what's currently used. And then use that texture in the pdo.

Are all this downloads for free??? Oo?

Yes, of course.

hi there. i tried making bulvasaur and that was so cute. but how do you guys take care of all your papercrafts? i mean do you brush it with something, a resin or anything, to make it a little harder?
i you could reply i'd be very happy. thanks

Hanna B said...

I was wondering, where do you get all the templates for the paper models?
Because I want to make a Shiny Glameow, but I don't think there is one yet, so where do I get paper model templates?

PMF said...

we actually create them ourselves. so if one isn't there, it's because we didn't make it yet.

Hanna B said...

Ok. HOW do you make them? I wanna try.

Hanna said...

I also have a question on the Shiny Umbreon Chibi.
I have the top part of the head folded cut and together, but the bottom part of the head...

I put the white flaps under the inside of the top part of the head, But there are white flaps on the bottom of the top part of the head too.
So how do i attach the two pieces??

Hanna B said...

UH, nevermind that last comment. I figured it out....

I still wanna know how to make these templates myself though...

Hanna B said...

It's been like 2 weeks since I asked my question.
And I'm almost done with the Umbreon chibi. Just gotta make the other ear, and the tail, them find some super glue.
But my question: HOW do I actually make a paper model template?

PAPERPOKES said...

We either create the model in a 3D CAD program or use a rip from one of the games. we then fix it alot, create new texture and bring it in Pepakura designer where we make the template. Then somebody testbuild it and if everything is ok, we create the final template and post them.

no, i wont explain the step any further than that. you can go on the Nintendopapercraft forum for more info.

Hanna B said...

I am now even more confused. *is dizzy*

The software is free. Winrar gives a message about upgrading, but never actually makes you upgrade (though if you like the software, it's recommended- not required); and Pepakura Viewer is free too. Any software used, that we're linking to, is free.

How come sometimes when I make models, the legs (or arms, or tail or something) is in a different angle than it should be, so it doesn't touch the ground of whatever.

John said...

This site is absolutely amazing. I'm a hardcore Pokemon fan as well as a bit of an artist...I'm surprised I have never thought of something like this before (though I do draw Pokemon frequently). Anyway I'm actually studying abroad in South Korea this year and I was planning a trip for Japan next week when I found this site one way or another. I'm going to try to hit up as many Pokemon Center stores in Japan as possible!! When I return home in June the first thing I'm going to do is... well, sleep. But after I get used to the time change I'm going to make as many of these as I have time for!! I can't wait and hope to see a lot of new templates by then too! (And it looks like you'll have to start cracking on 6th gen soon). Thanks for all your hard work and for an awesome site!

Brandon said...

Sometimes if the model's appendages aren't as expected, it's because a few of the folds (either in the body, legs, etc) weren't the right angle. Paper isn't rigid, so it'll move when given the chance.
Good news with that is, if it's only a slight difference, you can probably push or stress the paper a bit to make it go where you want.

Anonymous said...

How do you make your papercraft look so good? Do you have a trick, or is it your great expertise?

Anonymous said...

Are you going to papercraft them all???

frenchdavid50 said...

I started an Espeon (Espeon is my favorite pokemon) with lines after doing a Dialga Chibi. The Dialga looked bad, but I don't really care. Anyway, I nearly finished Espeon's head, but I ran in to a problem. I printed every model with lines, and they all look ugly! How the heck am I supposed to do it without lines! Is there any way to fix the ugly-ness of the lines without wasting paper printing tons more models? And if I do print out the models again, how do I make the models without knowing were to fold?

Draiken said...

@frenchdavid50
Experience can help a lot, but otherwise, for lineless models, I like to have Pepakura Viewer open so I can see where the folds would have been. Also, the templates are made so that the paper will (somewhat) naturally conform to the shape of the model you are making, so as long as the tabs are glued to the right places, it shouldn't be too big of an issue.

If you are still a bit uncomfortable with working without fold lines, Pepakura Viewer has a setting where you can increase the transparency of the fold lines (basically make the lines less dark) so that they don't stand out as much.

Anonymous said...

I've built a decent batch of your pokémon papercrafts (I absolutely love you guys for doing this) but now the room's getting a bit cramped ... I was wondering if I could maybe sell the ones I don't need (at our local garage sale, don't know if that matters) (for probably only the price of the paper and the time I put in, it's not for making profit or anything) or would you prefer that I didn't sell them?

Thanks again for all the amazing work you put in this :)
